The Barthel Index (BI) determines how independent and mobile a person is in their activities of daily living (ADL), such as feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, bowel control, bladder control, toileting, chair transfer, ambulation, and stair climbing. The index also identifies the need for care help. The BI is a widely used metric for assessing functional impairment. The index was created for stroke and other neuromuscular or musculoskeletal diseases rehabilitation patients, but it can also be utilized for oncology patients.
